100 years at Nordanå

The Nordanå Park, Skellefteå

Save the date! On September 14th, we’ll be celebrating 100 years since the Skellefteå Museum moved to Nordanå. Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing updates on social media, hosting lectures, releasing an anniversary book, and, last but not least, we’ll be celebrating the anniversary with a big party!

Out at the open-air museum, near the historic Major's residence Nyborg, there will be activities for the whole family. Expect lectures, guided tours, open houses in some of the older buildings, and plenty of activities for children. More information will be available after the summer.

You are warmly welcome!

A bit of history might be in order:

On November 10th, 1882, District Judge Anders Fredrik Ekewall invited people to a meeting "…to discuss the establishment of an antiquities society and the creation of a museum in Skellefteå city, for the storage of artifacts from Västerbotten." This laid the foundation for today’s museum and for cultural heritage preservation in Skellefteå.

Ekewall had been collecting ancient finds and antiques for many years, and after the museum was established, the collection was stored for many years in a location at Tjärhovsgatan 9. Ekewall was instrumental in both collecting and displaying the items, but after his passing and the move of the collection to the Town Hall area on Storgatan, the museum’s activities slowed. Then, in the mid-1920s, the city of Skellefteå purchased the military residence Nyborg at Nordanå, and in the late summer of 1925, the Skellefteå Museum moved in.

And the rest, as they say, is history…
